Doing more with less water: a grower’s guide to soil conditioners

Every grower thinks about water, but most think about it at the tap — the bore, the dam, the irrigation bill. The bigger reservoir is the one under your feet. A soil that holds and releases water well can carry a crop through a dry fortnight that would otherwise cost you a pass of the irrigator. Getting the soil to do that job is what soil conditioners are for.

Where the water actually goes

Water leaves a paddock in three ways before a plant ever uses it. It runs off the surface when the soil seals or slopes; it evaporates from bare ground; and it drains straight past the root zone in soils too coarse to hold it. On many Australian soils there is a fourth problem — the ground becomes water-repellent, or “non-wetting”, so irrigation and rain bead up and run off rather than soaking in. Fix those four leaks and you have found more water without buying a drop.

Lever one: build the soil’s capacity to hold water

The single most reliable way to hold more water is to lift the soil’s organic matter and improve its structure. The numbers are striking: research by Hudson found that every one per cent increase in soil organic matter raised the soil’s available water-holding capacity by around 3.7 per cent. That is water sitting in the root zone, available to the plant, rather than lost to runoff or drainage.

It works because organic matter glues fine particles into crumbs and creates a mix of small and large pores — the small ones hold water against gravity, the large ones let excess drain and air move. Humate-based conditioners accelerate exactly this aggregation, which is why they improve water behaviour in both heavy clay and light sand.

Lever two: get water to soak in, not run off

If your soil is non-wetting — common in sandy and sandy-loam country — no amount of holding capacity helps until the water actually penetrates. Soil wetting agents (surfactants) lower the surface tension of water so it spreads and soaks in instead of beading on top. Paired with a conditioner that improves structure, you both get the water in and keep it there.

The cheapest megalitre of water is the one you already applied and didn’t lose.

Lever three: keep the surface covered

Bare soil bakes and cracks, and evaporation strips moisture from the top layer where most feeder roots live. Maintaining ground cover and residue shades the surface, softens the impact of rain so it infiltrates instead of sealing the soil, and keeps the soil biology that builds structure alive. Conditioners and cover work together — one builds the sponge, the other stops it drying out.

A practical order of operations

Match the tool to the leak. If your soil is non-wetting, start with a wetting agent so water can get in. If it drains too fast or seals and runs off, focus on organic matter and structure to build holding capacity. Apply conditioners ahead of the dry season, not in the middle of it, so the soil has time to respond. And pair all of this with sensible irrigation scheduling — the goal is to water less often but more effectively, letting the soil do the storage between passes rather than topping up a leaky bucket every few days.

Why it adds up

Water is among the largest and least predictable costs an Australian grower carries, and the pressure on it is not easing. Treating the soil as your primary water store — and using conditioners to make it a better one — is some of the cheapest water you will ever secure.
